How to further secure your WHMCS installation

  • When WHMCS is installed, a few steps can be taken to bolster its security.
  • Open up your favorite FTP client or your control panel’s file manager. We will be using cPanel’s file manager for this tut.
  • By default, all files and directories contained in public directory of a web server can be directly downloaded by anyone. For certain content, such as downloads and attachments, this behavior is undesirable.
  • Start by moving the attachments, downloads and templates_c directories outside the public access.
  • On most shared hosting accounts, the public directory is named public_html or www. What we need to do is move the folders below that directory and in most of the cases, it will mean to put them in home directory. Home directory is /home/demo.
  • Select each directory. Place them in a new folder on the same level as public_html. Click on Move File(s) button to proceed. The folders will most likely take a few seconds to finish moving.
  • When finished, you will be able to see the folders disappearing and that the new WHMCS directory has appeared on the same level as public_html.
  • Next, you can rename the admin directory to add some security through obscurity. This will help to prevent malicious users from attempting to log into your admin area.
  • Admin directory must remain inside this folder and can’t be moved like others. It can only be renamed.
  • Select the directory. Click on Rename button from the top. Give new filename and click on rename button, when done. The directory will be renamed.
  • Lastly, WHMCS needs to be informed about the changes to the directory structure. Scroll up and open configuration.php for editing.
  •  First, update the variable $templates_compiledir. Next, add two variables and directory paths that follow. Finally, add the following variable to tell WHMCS the new name of admin directory.
  • Now, you can verify that admin panel works in new location. You have finished enhancing WHMCS with extra security.
