Choosing a text editor for web development

  • The most important thing to remember is that you should never write code of any sort in programs like MS Word. These programs are designed for formatting your text and will do so, unless you tell them otherwise. It will actually be a hassle for you.
  • The programs like FrontPage or Dreamweaver have some way for you to edit the raw HTML of webpage, but you don’t really need all extra features just to code XHTML.
  • All you need is a simple application, like notepad or some program specifically designed for coding.
  • Most of such programs will include syntax highlighting for a wide variety of web languages, which improves code readability quite a bit. HTML, XHTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP are some common languages you’ll see supported.
  • There are 2 particularly used: HTML-kit and Eclipse. Both have free versions available.
  • HTML-Kit is easy to set up and use, but its free version is getting a little outated. With the release of new paid version, developers have not made any updates to free version. It is fine for a beginner, but if you like to have more inclusions, better choose paid version.
  • HTML-Kit will operate only on windows. If this is a problem for you, go for Eclipse option. It is a Java based program and will function on pretty much any Operating System. Java programs have a drawback that they are CPU and memory intensive and run slow on newer systems.
  • Eclipse can be a bit harder to set up and use. It is a powerful tool if you plan to do any sort of advanced web development or programming in future. It is probably much more than you need for just coding XHTML.
